In Escape from Tarkov, you are given a choice between playing as two different classes: SCAVs or PMC. Ideally, you will want to be playing with both throughout your journey in Tarkov, but themore skilled players will likely play more PMC than SCAVs.
The reason why is simple enough: When you play as PMC, you play as your “main character”, so to speak. All of the items you have outside the actual game can be put on your main character, such as weapons/armor and consumable items, and when you play as a PMC you utilize those items.
All the money you have and any items obtained from your extractions WILL carry over to PMC, whereas with SCAV they will not. Not only that, but you will also level up your main character and as such have a higher rate of successful extractions by playing them. You also get to choose your landing point and as such where your extraction will be as a PMC.
So why play SCAV, then? It’s very simple: If you die as a PMC, you lose all of the items that you are carrying. That’s right: All of them. You can pay a hefty fee to insure your items so that if you die you can maybe get them back (basically only loot that doesn’t get taken by other people is what you can get back from insuring stuff), but doing so carries a risk since it’s possible that your items might not be found by your insurer.
However, you always have the option to play as a SCAV. These characters are placed randomly in the map, and your extraction point is choosed for you. You only have the most minimal of items: A gun, usually a backpack or something of the sort, and few consumable items. This means that you are very weak starting as a SCAV, but all it takes is one good kill on a PMC in order to gain a large advantage, since you can just loot their good gear. If you manage to complete an extraction as a SCAV, you get to keep ALL the gear that you’ve looted on your main character.
There is a small catch with playing SCAV, and that is if you die as a SCAV, you will be unable to play as a SCAV for another 20 minutes. This means that you will either have to wait or play as your main character in order to keep playing the game.
Thus, it’s best to play BOTH SCAV and PMC. One for when you are low on items and money, and the other to level up your main character.
